Flake is the workhorse of epoxy flooring, and the system we install most. Vinyl flake is broadcast into the wet base coat until the floor literally can't hold any more — full rejection — then scraped, vacuumed, and locked under a chemical-resistant topcoat.
The result hides dust and dirt between cleanings, adds slip resistance, and takes decades of real use. Flake blends run from quiet grays to custom color mixes, so the floor can disappear into the space or make it.

Partial-broadcast floors show roller lines and wear paths. Full rejection means complete, uniform coverage everywhere.

The process
What a flake epoxy job involves
Flake is the system we install most, in garages, basements, shops, kennels and commercial corridors. After diamond grinding and repairs, a pigmented base coat is rolled out and vinyl flake is broadcast into it by hand until the surface rejects any more — full rejection, not a light sprinkle. That complete coverage is what gives the floor its uniform look and texture, and it is why a full-broadcast floor does not show roller lines or wear paths.
Once the base cures, loose flake is scraped and vacuumed off, the surface is evened out, and a chemical-resistant clear topcoat seals the whole system. Texture can be tuned: where a floor will be wet — camp entries, wash-down areas, stairs — anti-slip aggregate goes into the topcoat. Blends range from quiet grays and tans to custom mixes, and we bring samples to the estimate so you can see them in your own light.
What moves the price
Flake floors are priced mainly on square footage and slab condition — crack and spall repair, removal of old coatings, and whether moisture mitigation is needed.
The flake blend and the topcoat build matter less than the prep, but anti-slip additive, cove or stair details and edge work at doors and ledges add labor. We price all of it into the estimate after seeing the space.
Flake is the standard system for our garage floor coatings and many basement floors, and it goes into kennels and stairs as part of our custom and specialty projects. How is this different from a DIY epoxy kit?+
Kits are a thin paint with sprinkled flake over unground concrete — they peel because nothing bonded. We diamond-grind the slab, use commercial-grade resins, and broadcast to full rejection. It's a different product entirely.
