Foreside homes and finished lower levels
Falmouth counted 12,444 residents in 2020, and its homes are mostly owner-occupied — about 84 percent — with a median year built of 1986 and roughly a third of homes built before 1970. Along Falmouth Foreside and Mackworth Point, homes face Casco Bay; inland, neighborhoods reach toward Blackstrap and Highland Lake.
Falmouth homeowners are the ones most likely to ask us for the premium finishes. A walk-out lower level or finished basement is where a hand-poured metallic epoxy floor makes sense: seamless, bright, and unaffected by the moisture that makes carpet and wood struggle below grade. For a basement that is simply storage or a gym, a light flake basement floor coating does the job at a lower cost.
Built on Presumpscot clay
Coastal Cumberland County is underlain in many places by the Presumpscot Formation — the blue-gray glaciomarine clay, once used for brickmaking, that takes its name from the river draining Falmouth. Clay holds water, so basements here can have steady vapor moving up through the slab even when the floor looks dry. We test moisture before every basement quote and build in a vapor-mitigating base coat when readings call for it, so the coating stays bonded.
Maine also has some of the highest radon levels in the country — more than a third of homes test high. A floor coating is not radon mitigation, so test first; a coated slab is simply a cleaner, brighter floor once that is settled.
Salt, snow and coastal garages
Falmouth garages see salt from Route 1, Route 88 and I-295 plus the air off Casco Bay, over winters that average close to 69 inches of snow around Portland. A diamond-ground garage floor coating with designer flake blends and a chemical-resistant topcoat keeps salt and sand on the surface, and clean edge work at granite steps and thresholds keeps the look finished. Coated stairs and entries are part of our custom and specialty projects.
Falmouth turned from farm town to suburb after the trolley line from Portland arrived in 1898, and the Portland Yacht Club has been on the Foreside since 1885 — so some Foreside homes are much older than the town median, and many garages hold boats, trailers and marine gear alongside cars. Around Highland Lake and toward Blackstrap, inland homes add workshops and basements to the mix.
Permits go through Falmouth's code enforcement division on Falmouth Road. We cover Falmouth from our Casco shop along with Portland, Westbrook and Windham.
